My first impression of the Documenta 14 in Kassel: Well, I’m a little bit disappointed. This has nothing to do with the shown artworks – they are absolutely fantastic – but it’s the atmosphere here in Kassel. The streets are crowded by a typical sort of people: those pseudo intellectual old German couples, arriving with their e-bikes, drinking Aperol Spritz on the rooftop bar of «floor 14», being so damn proud of what they have reached in life and parading their status… I only wish they would have taken the slogan of the Documenta «Learning from Athens» seriously. In June I was one week in Athens to explore the city and documenta14’s part over there and the atmosphere was so different from what it is here in Kassel. But maybe it’s hard to compare two cities which are so different in general. Let’s see if day two can change my mind.
